Caribou Information
The caribou (Rangifer tarandus) is a deer species found in North America, Europe, Greenland and Asia. One of the major distinctions in caribou is that both males and females develop antlers. Each year, the caribou sheds their antlers around the end of winter and begin growing new ones when spring approaches. While both genders grow antlers, the male’s antlers are typically larger and more complex than the female’s. There are a select few subspecies in which the female caribou lacks antlers altogether. So, what do caribou use their antlers for? Because they tend to live in cold northern regions, the winter season frequently blankets the landscape with snow, making it difficult for some of the native wildlife to find food. Thankfully, however, caribou are able to dig deep into the snow using their large and majestic-like antlers. In addition, to foraging for food, caribou also use their antlers to spar with one another and to defend themselves against natural predators.
Caribou also use their large hooves, which contain small holes in the center of them, to forage the landscape in search of food. If there’s a thick blanket of snow covering edible vegetation, a caribou will scoop the snow out with their hooves in order to reach the food. The small “cookie-cutter” cut-outs in their hooves make perfect tools to scoop out snow on the ground. As a result, they’ve adapted well to the cold, harsh environments of the northern hemisphere.
Caribou are considered a medium-to-large sized deer with the males weighing between 300-400 pounds and the females weighing between 180-250 pounds. In terms of appearance, they generally have a thicker, longer coat of fur than whitetails or other common deer species. In fact, caribou actually have two separate coats of fur – a soft, dense coat close to their body and a long coat of hollowed-out hair on the exterior for an extra layer of thermal insulation. This allows them to endure even the harshest winter storms and below-freezing conditions.
It’s important to note that the color of the caribou’s fur varies from almost a snow-white to a dark charcoal-grey. Typically, the further north the caribou resides, the whiter its coat will be. This naturally occurs so they will blend into the snowy environment more easily. The Peary subspecies is known to possess the whitest coat of all caribou.
Caribou Diet and Feeding Habits
Like other deer, caribou are ruminants, meaning they have a multi-chambered stomach. This allows them to eat and digest things other animals and people, would otherwise not be able to. Typically, a healthy caribou eats roughly 12 pounds of food consisting of willow leaves, birch leaves, grasses, shrubs, plants, mushrooms and other vegetation. When food is scarce, caribou have also been known to consume lemmings and other small rodents found in their environment.
Contrary to what some people may think, caribou are very capable runners, reaching speeds of 50mph at full force. When winter comes, caribou use their running ability to migrate further south into warmer areas where food is more easily accessible food. It’s not uncommon for them to travel over 30 miles per day when migrating, which is an impressive distance considering their size and the mountainous terrain in parts of Canada.

Caribou Antler Growth and Development
Caribou antlers are quite distinct and easy to identify based on some of their unique characteristics. As you can see from the image listed above, their antlers spider outwards in a way that’s similar to other deer species. However, they generally remain symmetrical and pointy throughout their development, making them a prize for antler collectors. Given the large size of caribou, a complete set of antlers can be quite large and complex.
Like all other deer species, caribou shed their antlers for the purpose of growing new ones. The timing varies depending on a number of different factors, but it usually occurs immediately after their mating season. If you live in Alaska, Canada or any other region populated with caribou, your best chance at finding shed antlers is during the spring and summer months when the snow has melted and the ground is uncovered.
