What are Deer Antler Mounting Kits?

How Deer Antler Mounting Kits Work
Different deer antler mounting kits work in different ways, which is why it's important to carefully read the instructions on how to use them. The majority of them, though, work with the same basic principle - You drill holes into the prepared antlers and connect them to the provided plaque (usually by screws) and cover the base with the velvet covered skull cap. Deer Antler Mounting Tips
- Make sure you've removed all the debris and excess tissue from the antlers and skull plate. You can do this by boiling the antlers in a large pot of water with a small bit of salt added for a couple minutes and letting them dry. This will also kill any dangerous bacteria that could be lurking on them. Be warned though, boiling antlers indoors can produce an unpleasant smell. After the antlers have dried, you can use a wire brush to help remove debris and sandpaper to smooth them the tips out a bit.
- You don't want to look at your antler mount and see crooked antlers hanging on the wall. Align the antlers up so they are as level as possible. If judging with your eyes isn't good enough, a laser level can help you accomplish this.
- Some people use a small amount of peroxide or bleach to whiten and sterilize the antlers.
- Use a hacksaw to trim the skull plate to fit properly if needed.
